VegasFlyer
After getting a Regen Required symbol on the display screen, I tried unsuccessfully to perform a manual Regen, with negative results, even after a couple attempts. After researching the issue, it seems highly likely that the Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) may need to be cleaned. I am curious if anyone has undertaken the removal and reinstall action of a DPF? If so, was there anything special worth noting on the process? It looks fairly straightforward, but always good to ask others who have been there, done that and still have a t-shirt from thier experience.... MrSeas
.....any fault codes? Lots of things can make a manual Regen a no-go. You may want to look at a couple "less expensive" fixes before you jump into the "most expensive" fix. The chemical Gregg uses is not "allowed" in the States as of yet. Lots of "sensors" and the "7th" injector may be possible problems. Fault codes can sometimes "help" in narrowing down the problem "child". Any service records on you truck from the previous owner? GLN
I was told by the service manager, at the dealership that I have had work done at, that a manual regen will not be allowed until all fault codes have been cleared. 2009 Volvo 670VLN 2012 Forrest River Cedar Creek 36RE 1999 Honda Valkyrie Interstate
Jemstone
The dealership service manager is probably correct. I have never been able to start a manual regeneration by parking and requesting the parked regeneration. I am fairly paranoid about regeneration now, as the regen sensor failed on me last fall. It would not start regeneration nor allow me to start a parked request for regeneration. The lack of regeneration allowed the diesel particulate filter to packup, which shut me down 125 miles north of Las Vegas. The tow bill to get the truck to the dealer was $1,178.00. Removing and cleaning the particulate filter and replacing the faulty parts ran close to the cost of the tow bill. Unfortunately, the truck's computer controls the regeneration process. Needing to regenerate and getting the computer to agree to do it are not the same. Jack Mayer
If you do not know the status of the last DPF cleaning then I'd recommend that you first get any faults taken care of, and then clean the filter. That way you know the status. That assumes you intend to keep the truck. Most dealerships charge around $800 to do the cleaning. After that, you should be able to go five or more years without any issues, assuming RV service. Jack & Danielle Mayer #60376 Lifetime Member Living on the road since 2000PLEASE no PM's. VegasFlyer
Thanks for the posts folks. 1. There are no fault codes indicated, just the symbol for Regen. 2. Anyone have info on testing sensors? 3. The cost to have a filter cleaned in Las Vegas, if I bring them the removed filter, is 279 to 379.00, depending on whether they need to bake the filter to get it clean A friend in SoCal has a Detroit shop that will clean it for 175.00, we are leaning toward doing that regardless f the filters, just so that we have a good baseline. atv_idiot
VegasFlyer:When I purchased my truck I was told the DPF would need to be replaced at some point. I was told they can only be cleaned so many times. The cost of new is in the 2500$ range, so lately I have been looking into bypassing the whole EGR/DPF system. If I can get some free time, I was planning to remove mine and bring it down to Freightliner to be cleaned (and see what they have to say about it) Also you may not be able to see historical codes in the system which may be holding up your regen. I hope to have the cables, adapters and software to be able to test the whole system and reset codes by the end of Sept. I'm told its the same software Volvo dealers have (Premium Tech Tool). I can change speed limits, pull and reset codes.. test sensors..
mrrrl2
atv_idiot, I would be interested to know more about the software/cables you are getting. I have looked but was unable to locate a third party clone/substitute. It would be nice to be able to test/reset/change myself. You can PM me. Brad & Jacolyn
If you got a tow bill I would highly suggest that you get Coachnet. BEST $129.00 a year I ever spent. ATV, When I checked with our local Volvo dealer, they told me that Mc Candless International was the only shop cleaning DPF's, though that always changes I reckon. Like you, I would like to check out the DPF and get an idea on the condition and viability of cleaning it and see if we can guesstimate how much life it has left. We will have to compare notes and maybe we can help each other on this one. There is a hardware kit listed on EBay that appears to possibly be a good match to the TechTool software that you listed. The kit is around 250.00. John Southern Nevada 2008 Volvo 780, D13, I-Shift 2017 Keystone Fuzion 420 Toyhauler 2017 Can-Am Maverick X3-RS

The kit is around 250.00. You are correct.. I forgot it was McCandless here.. I personally dislike our TEC/Volvo dealer in town. With my truck, it seems to want to regen every 3rd or 4th trip... (Normally we try and go out once a month, but lately we have all been too busy) Halloween is coming up and we have a build to get done before the holiday. I've looked around ebay, and it seems as if its just software.. the hardware is why it gets expensive. Since our trucks run from 2006 to 2012 w/ an ISX in the mix... makes it so expensive for us.. I found one company that has "chip" that bypasses the EGR and DPF, but I know it will take more than that to get rid of it. I also spoke with the guys at PDI in StGeorge and they currently dont have the software to do it... I am hoping I can get something together for them so they can use my truck as the guinea pig. I really prefer to get rid of the DPF before it leaves me stranded somewhere and would hate to throw $ away on getting it cleaned

justRich
From the Natcoa website posted by Tequila: There is a company in Canada that sells cleanable DPF filters for $1200-$1500 Can, about $2000-$3000 less than OEMS. They are good for the life of the truck. See http://reflowsolutions.com/. Once you buy the unit form Canada, the authorized US agent to clean them is http://cleandieselspecialists.com/From their website:Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) Service Kit gives Light Duty Diesel owners the option to clean their DPF instead of replacing it with a pricey OEM dealer unit. Most light duty Diesel Particulate Filters are not designed to be serviced like the more common heavy-duty diesel industry cartridge style DPFs. With the sealed light duty DPFs once the problematic onboard self-cleaning system (regen) is unable to thoroughly self-clean a clogged filter it quickly becomes the primary source of poor fuel economy, costly breakdowns and diesel engine failure.Re-Flow Solutions unique flanged DPF design offers a long-term solution to reoccurring regeneration and problematic plugged DPFs. Installing serviceable DPF will allow easy removal of the DPF's core which can then be cleaned and serviced. Using Re-flow's latest industry cleaning technologies and equipment we are able to restore a DPF to like new condition potentially saving the consumer thousands of dollars in factory replacement costs, repairs and downtime.
