solar/battery information

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I read a tremendous post/article on solar about 2 years ago on this forum and I am trying to find it now. The article was written by a gentleman that was very knowledgeable about RV solar systems and covered everything from A-Z. I believe he was an installer and referenced a member of this forum. Does that ring a bell for anyone. I hope I can find that post/article again. Thanks in advance if you can help me out.

Cheers

Brendan

Bob and I pretty much agree on things. He is a little more resistant to generators and was skeptical of MPPT controllers originally. The decision to go MPPT or not - to ME - is as much related to wiring issues and availability of components as it is the extra harvest gained from them. MPPT opens you up to lots of high efficiency, large, grid-tie panels that are simply not available otherwise. It also allows use of controllers that can handle larger arrays. That is more of a reason to go that direction than pure extra watts.

Brendan here are a few very basic sources regarding RV Solar Power I found helpful, I have attended Tecnnomadia's seminar which was excellent and informative, they are quite knowledgeable. Give them a look:

http://www.technomadia.com/solar/

http://www.gonewiththewynns.com/solar

http://www.cheaprvliving.com/basics-solar-power/

PS FWIW I have owned and used BOTH MPPT and PWM Solar Charge Controllers, and would recommend MPPT even thought they could cost a bit more

I designed & installed our Solar system for our 5th wheel, mostly using the information and advice from Jack Mayer & Handy Bob. The support and willingness to help here made the installation a success. Jack Mayer's site has a TON of information, divided into several sections. Be sure you look at EVERYTHING! Here is the thread from about the time I was installing my system: http://www.rvnetwork.com/index.php?showtopic=116134&hl=

Jack and Handy Bob are both excellent sources of information. I just wish someone would have pointed me towards a 24 VDC system back when I was doing my research.

If at all possible think about a higher voltage battery system.

Just my 2 cents....
