Time for a new Laptop

Recommended Posts

Cee, Great!

Let us know how you like it! I think you are miles ahead with the TV as monitor and TV reception. I really was surprised by that system and the specs/price bang for the buck. We have on Lenovo All in one now. And we had one of their 11.6" first generation Windows tablets both of which were excellent build quality. It sounds ideal for your needs as described. Glad to help.

RV:

I'm really liking the machine you linked to above and will most likely go down this path.

Costco has a wall mountable 24" Samsung 1080p LED monitor I'd couple it to.

Thanks again!

Cee

The only Samsung 24" monitor/TV that I could find has a resolution of 1366 x 768. This would not be a good choice for a computer monitor. Are you sure the one mentioned is a full 1080p?

Yes, 1080p and it's not a TV, just a monitor.

So, once again I've taken another turn just not so big this time.

I'm still in the 24' monitor / mini computer camp just going to a little more powerful unit though. My nephew is pretty sharp with this stuff and with his help this looks like the route I'll go now http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-i3-6100U-Barebone-Components-GB-BSi3H-6100/dp/B0196KJCPS/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

I'll be installing 8GB's of RAM, a small (128GB) SSD for the programs to reside on and 1TB HDD as a backup to my external 2TB HDD that I already have. I'll run an external read / write DVD player as well as the above mentioned USB OTA TV stick.

I've settled on WIN 7 for the OS as it has everything I'm looking for. In regards to the OS I don't need any compatibility with other devices as I have no other devices and just run a dumb phone. No need for touch screen or any of those other bells & whistles.

Cee,

Check out these search returns so you do not have to buy a TV tuner for the computer: http://www.bing.com/search?q=24%22+1080p+TV&src=IE-SearchBox&FORM=IENTSR&pc=EUPP_

The USB tuner will give you full DVR functions too, at least mine does. Sounds like you've got it nailed.

Hauppauge makes a couple of USB tuners. The WinTV-HVR-955Q is a single digital/analog tuner. The WinTV-dualHD has two digital tuners and is cheaper than the 955Q. Since all full power TV stations in the U.S. are now transmitting only digital there's not much need for an analog tuner. With two tuners you can record one program and watch a second channel or record two programs at the same time.

I skipped through most of this thread, so if I missed something, I am sorry. I have a ThinkPad from Lenovo with windows 7 professional. I didn't want Win-10 this soon after release, and Microsoft will soon stop support for Win-7 Home. Microsoft will update Win-7 Pro for a few more years. I purchased from Lenovo site that let me pick the upgrades, downgrades I wanted. Solid state hard drive was worth the extra.

Sehc,

At one time Microsoft indicated that they would support business editions of Win 7 (Pro / Enterprise) longer than Home, but now all editions will be supported until 2020. Of course Micr0$0ft wants people to think otherwise to encourage them to move to Windows 10.

You missed something. The OP has decided to go with a mini-PC running Windows 7.

I wanted to follow up with you guys to let you know where I’m at.

I bought the Gigabyte Brix Core i3, a pretty awesome little machine.

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-i3-6100U-Barebone-Components-GB-BSi3H-6100/dp/B0196KJCPS/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

For the RAM we used the Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) supposed to run a little faster I guess.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005LDLVAO/ref=twister_B00H8JVIKM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

We used the Transcend 128GB SSD for the programs to reside on.

http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-128GB-MTS800-Solid-TS128GMTS800/dp/B00KLTPURI/ref=pd_sim_147_6/179-2162236-7568012?ie=UTF8&dpID=41-uwWXnXOL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1ES15CRXH6MFNGPDH7X8

and a Seagate 1TB SSHD for general storage.

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Gaming-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1464306753&sr=8-2&keywords=seagate+1tb+gaming

I used Windows 7 software. We encountered a little problem installing the software. The Gigabyte Brix has all 3.0 USB Ports. Windows 7 only supports USB 2.0. We (my nephew) had to attach some sort of driver in with the Win7 software to get it installed. Anyway, he got it done and I’m up and running.

I mentioned above that the monitor was a Samsung but it’s not, it’s LG. I bought it at Costco for $130. No link to Costco but here’s to one at Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-24M47VQ-24-Inch-LED-lit/dp/B00W95RR32/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465151017&sr=8-1&keywords=lg+24+led+monitor

I bought this speaker system to install under the monitor.

http://www.amazon.com/Soundbar-Powered-Subwoofer-Speaker-Earphone/dp/B01ARQMUE0/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1465154259&sr=1-1&keywords=ES+700A+Mini+TV+Soundbar+USB+Powered

Here’s the wall mount I’m going to use.

http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Monitor-Screen-Maximum-Loading/dp/B000VKCIJU/ref=pd_sim_23_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=415LY37rzML&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0YR78Y6QZD5XQ0H5YCEH

On its way as I mentioned above is the Hauppauge Win TV-Dual HD Tuner

http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1191-WinTV-HVR-955Q-Tuner-Notebook/dp/B001DEYVXO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465150018&sr=8-1&keywords=Hauppauge%27s+WinTV-HVR-955Q

I need a few more USB ports.

http://www.amazon.com/Anker-Ultra-Slim-4-Port-Data/dp/B00XMD7KPU/ref=sr_1_13?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1465153900&sr=1-13&keywords=usb+3.0+4+port+hub

I’m splurging on a mouse pad

http://www.amazon.com/Mouse-Pad-JETech%C3%82%C2%AE-Wrist-Black/dp/B0159S1O70/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1464646357&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=mouse+pad&psc=1&smid=A1RI0YHZ8J2HZU

and on the list to get but not needed right now is a new Blu-Ray Player / Laptop Bruner.

http://www.amazon.com/Blu-Ray-Player-External-Laptop-Burner/dp/B001TVAU0E/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1464647719&sr=8-5&keywords=blue+ray+burner+external

When I get the installation going I’ll see if I can get a few pics posted here. FYI I’ve been updating my build thread over at SBR.

Good system! I do see one issue though. Your plugs on the back of the monitor are straight out the back, not downwards or on the sides, which means your ultra thin wall mount isn't going to allow for easy plug swaps, and won't even allow for the plugs without a hole in the wall. I think you might want to look at these: http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Articulating-Monitor-Bracket-ML10B/dp/B000ID7QNI/ref=pd_sim_23_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=41p4hHfaaLL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1T506AR064QC5BMFVQHS which is inexpensive and would both allow positioning for plug clearances, and give you more flexibility in viewing. I hadn't thought about the USB 3 issues with a Windows 7 unit. While you said you ordered the dual tuner model the one you linked to is the single tuner model I have, which is quite good. It also records as a DVR. Here is the dual tuner model http://www.amazon.com/HAUPPAUGE-WinTV-DualHD-Tuner-Windows-1595/dp/B015IL0FIW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465164115&sr=8-1&keywords=Hauppauge%27s+dual+TV+tuner

I would not worry too much unless you do want to do PIP or watch one/record another channel. Mine is really awesome for what it does. Great HD picture.

RV, thanks.

As for the HDMI cable I have a right-angle one coming. As for the Turner if you look just down the the page there's a box you can click on for the dual turner one.

The same for the speakers a box for the 10 watt version and one for the 20 watt version. This I did not notice this and ordered the 10 watt. I'm going to see if I can return (exchange) it for the 20 watt.

Yeah,

Saw the dual tuner option on that page this time. But like I said, either way you would be good to go. The right angle might work if it is less than .6 inch from TV when plugged in. I am wall mounting a 65" UHD 4k TV with a floating wall unit under it. I am considering adding a false wall to both support it and to build in the Yamaha YSP 800 Sound projector, the Yamaha sub will be on the floor and all wires are getting fished through the wall as is the OTA antenna that will be mast mounted on the back of the house which faces the broadcast towers 10 miles away. My TV back has the Antenna coax coming in straight at the back although I have 3 of the 5 HDMI ports on the side along with the USB and SD card slots. Here's the floating console for under the TV, we already have two of their floating nightstands installed in the BR: http://www.woodwaves.com/collections/wall-mountable-tv-stands/products/floating-media-stand-lotus-2-piece-russet-brown So clearances are on my mind too. Sounds like you've got it covered. Again nicely put together.

Tom, thanks for the link but I don't need the burner to do Blu-Ray, just be able to read one if I ever have the chance to view one. All the ISO files I have have been compressed so there would be no need to try to burn one as the data is not there.
