  5. History, Mystery and the Universe HOP Sept 18 – 22, 2023 UPDATE: We have a couple of RV sites left if you want to join us on this HOP! The area you will visit is like no other. It is often called “the Gateway to the Big Bend,” and you’ll find radiant night skies, cowboy hospitality and friendly folks. It is where the stars at night are big and bright, and the skies are not cloudy all day! This HOP will give you a great mix of the culture and land around the Davis Mountains and the Big Bend area. Fort Davis is the highest town in Texas at 4,900 feet above sea level. Located a short drive from Fort Davis is the world-renown University of Texas’ McDonald Observatory, where you will see one of the largest telescopes in the world. It is the Hobby-Eberly Telescope and here you will have four extraordinary tours: the Telescope, the Solar, The Twilight and the world-famous Star-Gazing Party! The Davis Mountains cover over 15,000 square miles and contain some of the darkest skies in the United States. In fact, this area is one of the largest Dark Sky Communities in the world and it is the first reserve to cross an international boundary, which happens to be the border Texas shares with Mexico. Visit Fort Davis, one of the best surviving examples of an 1854 to 1861 frontier military post in the Southwest, located there to protect the travelers and the mail and freight wagons on the Trans-Pecos portion of the San Antonio to El Paso Road, called the Chihuahua Trail. Also, we will learn about the Buffalo Soldiers that served at Fort Davis from 1867 to 1885 and the important role these men played in the frontier army. Outside of Ft. Davis lies the Chihuahua Desert. It is the largest desert in North America, covering 200,000 square miles, and is the most geographically diverse dry region in the world. Stopping for pictures and a guided tour of this magnificent area, you will learn about the climate, plants and animals that make this area so fascinating and how life can be sustained in this harsh dry land. Davis Mountains State Park was established with 540 acres, in 1933, and was one of the earliest projects for the Texas Civilian Conservation Corps. They built many of the facilities still used in the park today. An Indian Lodge sets on a mountain overlooking the state park with its white adobe walls and historic rustic charm. The town of Marfa is slowly becoming the Mecca of Art and tourism. In 1971, Donald Judd, an artist from New York, visited Marfa and fell in love with the small-town atmosphere. He purchased a home in Marfa, founded the Judd Foundation and the Chinati Foundation and constructed art galleries in several buildings on one city block. While in Marfa, you will tour Building 98, built in 1895 as officers’ quarters and headquarters for the Big Bend Military District during the Mexican Revolution. Building 98 is a historic building listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and is a Registered Historic Texas Landmark. While touring Building 98, you will see WWII German POW murals painted by prisoners who were among those placed at Fort Russell at the request of General George Patton. Mona Blocker Garcia will lead this tour. She is none other than the founder of the International Woman’s Foundation and cousin to Dan Blocker (Hoss Cartwright) of the TV series Bonanza. While in downtown Marfa, visit the Marfa Courthouse. The Presidio County Courthouse is one of the prettiest in Texas. Notice the woodwork throughout the courthouse. Take the circular staircase to the top floor and look out a window to see the entire town of Marfa. This courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Before viewing the Marfa Lights, visit the beautiful and historic Hotel Paisano. Built in 1930, it was one of the most elegant hotels of its time. In 1955 the Hotel Paisano was used as headquarters to film the classic movie “Giant,” starring James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. Other movies filmed in the Marfa area are The Gambler, Lonesome Dove, The Good Old Boys, Streets of Laredo, Dead Man’s Walk, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men and Dancer. Texas Population 81 was filmed in nearby Ft. Davis, and many locals were used as extras. On the way to view the Marfa Lights, stop and see the "Pillars," an enigmatic arrangement of twelve ten-foot steel pillars, each weighing over three hundred pounds, inscribed with Jason Tucker's mysterious symbols. Each image looks like a space alien. During the day, the images look like faint lines or drawings on the pillars, but at night, each image lights up, bringing the space alien to life floating above the ground. Jason Tucker grew up in San Angelo, Texas, a town northeast of Marfa. Complete this HOP with the Marfa Lights. Native American residents knew about the Marfa Mystery Lights long before the first recorded sighting in 1883. These mysterious dancing lights are not always there, but starting at dusk and deep into the night is the best time to see them. The orb lights can be white, red, blue, orange, or green. They appear randomly and move throughout the sky above the tree line. They will move toward you, away from you, or maybe to the right and left of you. The terrain under the lights is rough and rugged; no streets or houses are in the area. The Big Bend area is trendy in September and October, so please register for the HOP as soon as possible. Bring your camera, binoculars, telescope and comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for West Texas hospitality! 15. The Black Hills and Badlands HOP (The Head Out Program) October 6 – 10, 2020 The Escapees RV Club is offering an amazing set of combination tours for the Black Hills and Badlands. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Custer State Park, the Presidential Summer White House to former President Calvin Coolidge and Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the surrounding areas are a few of these tours! Mount Rushmore National Memorial contains granite faces carved into the Black Hills depicting U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. These stately faces are nearly 60 feet high. George Washington’s nose is 21 feet tall, and each of the eyes on Mount Rushmore is about 11 feet wide, with each mouth is about 18 feet wide. The memorial was completed in 1941 under the direction of artist Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln. Located in the middle of America’s heartland, are a wooded and mountainous region called, the Black Hills. The Lakota Sioux tribe called this mountain range Pahá Sápa, or “Hills That Are Black.” From a distance, the hills are dark in appearance with mostly ponderosa pines. On the other hand, the Badlands are a sunny, desert-like area with cliffs and gullies. The Badlands are indeed a testament to the power of the forces of wind and water! Located in the beautiful Black Hills, is Deadwood, founded in 1875, being the location of the last major gold rush in the United States. The booming town gained a reputation as a rough-and-rugged mining camp where Wild Bill Hickok was killed, and Calamity Jane earned her claim to fame. While in Deadwood, you can study the historical narratives of the Native American Lakota tribe and their hunt for the bison. Custer State Park and wildlife preserve is famous for bison, but also has mule deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorns, mountain goats, coyotes, elk and bighorn sheep. 19. Balloon Fiesta HOP (Head Out Program) Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Option #1: October 2 - 7, 2020 Option #2 October 7 - 11, 2020 Option #3: Oct. 2 - 11, 2020 Balloons, balloons and more balloons! If this world premiere event is on your bucket list, join the Escapees RV Club HOP for the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Each morning, as dawn breaks over the Sandia Mountains, the skies will fill with 600 bright, beautiful hot-air balloons from all over the world. From its beginnings in 1972, the Balloon Fiesta has grown into the largest International Balloon Fiesta, with a 365-acre Balloon Fiesta Park and a launch field the size of 54 football fields (78 acres). It is the most photographed hot-air balloon festival in the world, with 886,307 attendees in 2019. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the only Balloon Fiesta where the "box effect" comes into play. The "box effect" is a unique wind pattern that helps pilots navigate their balloons in a vertical, rectangular path; allowing them to return to the launch field, or even landing next to your RV. The Dawn Patrol lifts off in the dark, with specially-fitted lights, to observe weather conditions at different altitudes, such as the wind speed and its direction. Upon approval, the balloons lift off in a mass ascension. The "Zebras," dressed in black and white, are the ones who coordinate the launching of the balloons. One of the most exciting events is the Flight of the Nations Mass Ascension, where balloonists wave their national flag during the launch. Even though there are always traditionally-shaped balloons, there will be various specialty shapes, too, and some of the most popular are the cow, sun, pig, stagecoach, clock, skunk, the Ladybug and the sweetest mother, daddy and baby bumblebees. The bumblebee's hands have Velcro, so when they touch in midair, it appears they are holding hands. When visiting any of the balloon pilots, remember to ask them for one of the trading cards, which will explain all the pertinent information about their balloon. This fiesta also hosts the Gas Balloons – America’s Challenge race, with the winner being the one that has traveled the farthest. Past gas balloons have gone as far as the East Coast and across Canada. You can track their progress on the Fiesta website. At dusk, you can see the Twilight Glow on the launch field. This is when the burners are ignited, filling the balloons with a bouquet of bright colors. Then, the nights will finish with an extraordinary display of fireworks. Escapees will have Boondocking, “rally style” parking and a private tent for inclement weather, socials, games and catered meals. There will be a considerable amount of walking, so please bring comfortable walking shoes, as well as binoculars and a camera to capture those once-in-a-lifetime special moments. Early arrival - Options 1 and 3 Due to the popularity of this event, we recommend early arrival for parking at the HOP location for Options 1 and 3 only. Early arrival is September 29, 2020. 21. Travel with us to the 49th State and experience the magic that only Alaska can offer, on this spectacular 7-day, round-trip cruise, on Holland America’s, Ms. Oosterdam. Witness lush rainforests, colossal mountains and salmon making their way upstream in the clear river streams, with bear and moose roaming freely in their natural habitat. You may even catch a glimpse of whales breaching the water. Alaska, also, has some of the world's most spectacular glaciers. These glaciers often drop huge chunks of ice, a process called calving, into the sea. The calving sounds like a huge clap of thunder! Alaska is a part of the world where Mother Nature has been left alone in her natural state, where wildlife remains abundant. After the recall date (see above), Escapees may not be able to secure a cabin and even if we can, it will not be at the rates listed here.
